My Eastern Conference NBA Season SEE-view + New Hip Hop 2.0 = The Blog Is Back!

Good (insert period of day) reader, welcome back.

I had begun an NBA season preview some time ago but like many things I begin, that's as far as I got with it. Before I knew it the season had already begun and my preview became less a preview and more a collection of mislead assumptions and assertions, as this season has been anything but predictable thus far. So instead of a late preview, here is my 'see-view'; a collection of scenarios/events/ points of interest that have jumped out at me to begin this season. Some things we may have seen coming; surprise, surprise - the Spurs are decent again. Others, adios Mike Brown, not so much.

That said, let's begin out East where events have been a bit more predictable thus far, case in point - the Miami Heat and the surest thing of past 20 years, LeBron James. While many potentially elite teams have struggled out of the gate, ahem, the Lakers, the Heat have picked up from where they left off last season as the undisputed kings of the NBA Court. Not only have the Heat regained their place atop the NBA pyramid, but LeBron continues his defiant 12 month 'eff you' run as the best basketball player in the world. 'Best in the world' was previously a tag LeBron courted with, though not without controversy; performing remarkably during the regular season, he had yet to turn it up on the biggest stage of all. Safe to say the days of this argument have long since expired. It appears that since last season's coronation, his summer performance at the Olympics, and now the start of the 2012-13 season, he is the undisputed top dog of the basketball world; a position of dominance we haven't seen since Shaq's early run in the 2000's and Jordan through the early to mid 90's. He's scored 20+ in every game so far this year. You can book him every night. When considering that he has just recently entered his prime, I don't expect him to relinquish this perch anytime soon. The Heat are still my unquestioned contender out of the East. With an Eastern Conference catered to their small ball style, they should remain the peerless leaders of the conference.
Current Record: 16-6 Crystal Ball: 66-16 1st in East, 2013 NBA Champs

Check out this interesting timeline supercut of Lebron James' career dissected as it happened on PTI. If you like Lebron, PTI or just the game of basketball in general this is a must see!

Contenders*
So with the Heat establishing themselves as the cream of the East crop and undoubtedly the team to beat when the playoffs arrive, that leaves us with the question - who will finish second out East? Let's take a look at what I've seen out East so far; a mix of a faux contenders (albeit, for 2nd place*), a few yet unknowns, some obvious pretenders dressed up as first round doormats and the those have-nots already jockeying for yet another top lottery position. I'll give a few initial thoughts on each team, an extended look at my Knicks, plus I'll get out the crystal ball and predict a final record and standing for each of the 16 Eastern Conference squads. Giddy up.

My New York Knicks - I'm a complete mix of emotions when it comes to the Knicks hot start to the 2012-13 season. Do I let myself get pulled in by their outstanding start. (Undefeated through their first 6 games, started 8-1 overall, first place in the East to this point!) Do I embrace with pride and joy, or do I fear the inevitable swoon as they presumably fall from grace, crushing my hopes and dreams, yet in their infancy. It's a long season no doubt, and at some point Amare Stoudemire (very soon) is going to come back and the Knicks are going to have to play their 100 Million Dollar man and his 2 dollar defense. Ironically, getting our most highly prized free agent signing of the past 10 years back on the court is my biggest fear. Go figure. There is something really not quite right about that feeling, but it certainly persists. Consider the Knicks have been terrific when they go small. Melo taking over the 4 spot; allowing him to punish bigs with penetration and shooting from mid range and long range, while doing a decent job defending them on the other end. Also, Chandler has proved more than competent at the pick and roll, a skill previously thought to be Stoudemire's bread and butter. So with Stoudemire back, the pick and roll doesn't really improve and we lose the advantage of Melo's versatility. If I thought Stoudemire was a team first guy and would embrace a move off the bench this would be a terrific bounty, giving the Knicks a remarkably solid scoring option off the bench when Melo or Chandler need rest or replacing. (Melo will inevitably end up in foul trouble checking fellow bigs on ocassion.) Unfortunately, I don't think Stoudemire is that guy and that's what keeps me up at night. How he and the Knick's handle his return, will decide the competitiveness of the 2012-13 edition of the Knicks; and ultimately his legacy as a Knickbocker. Current Record: 18-6 Crystal Ball: 52-30 3rd in the East.

Atlanta Hawks - The Hawks have been the definition of addition by subtraction, wisely realizing that running the same team that has gotten beaten in the playoffs each of the past 5 years was not the answer, the Hawks used the offseason to shake up their mix; gone is former 'franchise' talent Joe Johnson and his mammoth contract, instead the Hawks have replaced him with a series of other lower cost replacements in Lou Williams, DeShawn Stevenson, Kyle Korver and Devin Harris that provide more than he had in nearly every department except scoring. Jeff Teague has finally come into his own as one of the many above average point guards across the league and is more athletic than most people think. With a healthy Al Horford up front and Josh Smith still doing Josh Smith things on the break and on the defensive end, this team has the potential to be a tougher out than they have been in some time. I like this squad as a regular season standout, aided in large part by the fact aside from the Heat, they also share a division with the Magic, the Bobcats, and the Wizards - that's 12 W's waiting to happen. A weak division and a lot of depth should spell a great regular season record. That said I still don't think they have enough offensive fire power to see them competing for the crown when it's all said and done.
Current Record: 15-7 Crystal Ball: 54-28 2nd in the East

Just in case you were still skeptical of Jeff Teague.

Too Early To Exclude - The Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics have not looked like much so far into this new season. The Celts have struggled out of the gate with a lack of size up front and some of it's key players showing their age early on. The return of Avery Bradley and Doc Rivers ability to galvanize the defense has me thinking it's still too early to weigh in on the C's ability to contend this year, they always seem to have a second half run in them. With regard to the Bulls, much of it comes down to the return on Derrick Rose and his reconstructed knee. To call them a contender is certainly premature, with so much potential for change to take place, it's still to early to suggest they won't be around at season's end. And lastly, Brooklyn still gets my benefit of the doubt, having only assembled the majority of principal players in the offseason, it may still take some time for the nucleus of Williams, Wallace, Lopez, Johnson, and Humphries to gel as a unit.

Boston Celtics - The Celtics came into the season with quite a bit of hype as they seemed poised to add some much needed youth to their rotation, while still counting on their aging vets continued heavy lifting. Early returns have been mixed as some of the new faces have panned out, while others have yet to show up. Is Jeff Green any good? Couple that with the fact that some of the aging veterans have begun to show their age and this team may have more issues than initially thought. Pierce, while still entirely capable of playing at a high level - say a quarter at a time, doesn't seem like the same guy capable of carrying the offensive load for a full 82 games at 35 minutes a game. Garnett too, isn't getting any younger and he seems to have taken on more of the load inside than ever, with a seemingly undersized front line, that will only get smaller when the Darko Millicic experiment goes the way of Patrick Swayze (Ghost, not mortality. P.S. RIP). The X Factor continues to be Rondo. His development as a leader will be paramount for an offense that depends largely on his ability to create shots for others and pick the right spots for himself. There was quiet talk of a Rondo MVP type season, and while Rondo continues to show improvement, yet he still hasn't added a consistent mid range game. So in my mind, he hasn't taken the leap that many Celtic die hards had hoped for. Unless that happens the Celtics window for Pierce and Garnett appears to be quickly coming to a close.
Current Record: 13-12 Crystal Ball: 48-34 5th in the East

Chicago Bulls- Chicago, the land of many questions, few answers. What we do know is that Tom Thibidou has changed the culture here in such a way that the undermanned Bulls will be able to continue carrying out their suffocating defensive game plan in the undersized East. Despite the loss of Chicago's favourite son, Derrick Rose, the Bulls have continued to show a competitiveness and intensity to be admired around the league. That said their ability to contend for the crown this season depends entirely on his ability to return from a scary ACL injury last year in the playoffs. If Rose returns to form by the All Star break, I could see Chicago making a run down the stretch. Regardless, I think their defense first mindset (and weak lower half of the Eastern  will get them enough wins to be a playoff team, how they go from there depends entirely on Derrick Rose's surgically repaired left knee.
Current Record: 14-10 Crystal Ball: 46-36 6th in the East

Brooklyn - The newly relocated Nets have found a home and roster they like in Brooklyn and early returns, while positive have not been overwhelming. It will still take a little while yet for this team to gel entirely and they likely could still use one more long perimeter defender and a knock down shooter but the Brooklyn Nets have come together quite well early in the season and with one of the only legitimate bigs in the Eastern Conference the Nets squad has enough talent to think of itself as a potential darkhorse for this season's crown. Now it's gonna take a Wally Szczerbiak amount of gelling but an injury to any of Miami's big 3 could have the Nets looking like the upset pick out of the East. They've got great guard play in Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, size and strength up front on the boards with Humphries and Lopez and a good mix of veteran glue guys and young athletes to boot. If Brooklyn says healthy and comes together through the more traditional 82 game season, two big if's, they can start talking about contending, or at the very least as we saw last night, being the best team in New York. Gulp.
Current Record: 13-12 Crystal Ball: 49-33 4th in the East

Playoff Doormats - These teams have the roster make up to make a run at the post season, but that's about as much success as they can hope for from this season. This is arguably the worst place to be for a franchise, on the outside looking in without a lottery pick to show for it. That said, both Philly and Indy are missing crucial components of their respective teams with Bynum and Granger both nursing long term injuries, if either were to return it could make a difference but I don't see it being meaningful enough or with enough time. However, were either team to tank the season, (more on this below) Bynum or Granger's return, plus a quality draft pick could mean big things for next season, a la the 1997 San Antonio Spurs, just a thought.

Philadelphia Sixers - Right now, the Sixers are the big losers when it comes to the blockbuster Dwight Howard giveaway/exchange late this summer. Andrew Bynum, a human bandaid in his own right, was suppose to be the big piece of the deal for the Sixers; it seems the Lakers knew something the Sixers didn't as Bynum has unfortunately developed swelling in his knee and would start the season on the injured reserve, this minor swelling ultimately led to hmm, major swelling? It's now spread to the other knee as well, brought about by hmm, bowling, perhaps? Whatever you make of it, the whole thing smells like a lost season for both Bynum and the Sixers. A particular shame because Jrue Holliday is having a breakout season for Sixers, his role increased with Lou Williams and Andre Igoudala out. Holliday's improvement, coupled with Doug Collins' continued ability to infuse the rest of the Sixers with his gritty defensive minded intensity will have the Sixers seeing playoffs, but I think the first round is as far as this team goes.
Current Record: 12-14 Crystal Ball: 44-38 7th in the East

Indiana Pacers -Two steps forward one step back is what I see from the 2012-13 edition of the Pacers. Last season's ... record representing the two steps forward. That said, the Pacers are a good team, but not a great team. Despite being on the fringe of actual contention last season, the Pacers seem to have taken a step back this season with the loss of Danny Granger, Darren Collison and . Furthermore they probably overpaid for Roy Hibbert's services, however the case could be made to keep him; they had the cash to spend, and no other legit BIG's were available to them (they weren't getting Dwight). Also consider, it's quite clear you're not going to beat Miami at their own game, so you need something they don't have (low-post scoring). You could talk me into believing the Pacers had really no choice but to pay Hibbert, that said, I don't see this ending well.
Current Record: 14-12 Crystal Ball: 43-39 8th in the East

Playoffs Possibilities - Here are some teams that I believe will have a legit shot at winning 40 games this season, which should put them in the talk for the final couple playoffs spots when the season all shakes out. That said most of these squads are only a fortunate injury away from the lottery contention which is where they would likely benefit most heading into next season, barring a quantum leap in ability from more than a couple of players. This is always a tricky spot, especially for 3 franchises which will have a desperately difficult time luring the potential free agents it would take to lift these squads to the next level. Orlando just been jilted by free agency with Dwight Howard holding them in free agent purgatory and Milwaukee hasn't signed a big name free agent since. Both of these teams need major help to move from out of the mediocore zone, instead they look to be there for awhile.

Milwaukee Bucks - The Bucks are another guard led squad that is exciting to watch but doesn't have enough dynamics to compete with the big dogs of the East. Jennings and Ellis are as forminable a tandem as there is in the league at the guard spot, when their on. This squad looks very much like Golden State East now that Ellis has shifted coasts and traded his former shoot first PG S. Curry for his current shoot first PG. Brandon Jennings. This usually makes for exciting viewing, yet mediocore results. The Bucks continue to miss a solid low post scoring option up front and I don't see Ilyasova taking another quantum leap; like the leap he took last year. This is the definition of a team that is one All-NBA talent up front away from balancing out the offense and turning the Bucks into a team worth talking about in May. As for June, there's still a ways to go before we can discuss the idea of June basketball in Milwaukee.
Current Record: 13-11 Crystal Ball: 42-40 9th in the East

Orlando Magic - Once thought to be definite undeniable losers of the Dwight Howard fiasco. Wait, didn't I already acknowledge the Sixers as the definite undeniable losers? Let's start by saying everybody, but the Lakers, wait, I think now we can say even the Lakers lost in the trade, complete debacle. Furthermore, when I say fiasco, it extends beyond the trade itself and into the whole way in which the Dwight Howard trade saga shaped the league wide view of Orlando. Not only did the Magic trade one of the 5 most dominant players in the league for a collection of spare parts and used batteries, they also sent a nasty message of player driven authority and sacrificed a great coach for a 'chance' at a player that never wanted to be there in the first place. So from a philosophical point, I still think the Magic mishandled the situation. From a talent standpoint, Afflalo wasn't a bad addition but this team is a few lottery selections away from actual contention. Reddick and Big Baby have shown over their careers that they can be reliable bench options on a good squad; franchise cornerstones, not so much. There's a lot of rebuilding left to go in Orlando but they've already shown a admirably resiliency compared to some of the other chronically annual, basement dwellers.
Current Record: 12-13 Crystal Ball: 28-54 13th in the East

Lottery Bound - Hard to believe, but we're already around 25 games in and yet there are still 5 Eastern conference teams mired in single digit win totals. If you don't win at least 10 of your first 25 games you can pretty much count on the season being a wash. So with that established, these teams are obviously best suited to use the season developing their young players, meanwhile looking to collect expiring contracts, stockpile draft picks and pursue other future minded opportunities.

Which essentially brings into question this idea of tanking; the notion that I've already covered briefly to this point, where it is best for a team to 'mail the season in', ensuring them of a high draft pick and a shot at a future superstar talent to help raise the team up from the dole-drums of mediocrity. This is easier said than done and at the very least a bit hypocritical as fans. I'll look at Toronto because tanking this season for them has greater implications than for some of the other teams in similar losing situations. The Raps will lose there 2013 1st Round draft pick, which belongs to Houston as part of the deal that brought Kyle Lowry to Toronto, that is unless they recieve a top 3 pick as the trade had a special provision which left the top 3 picks protected for Toronto. Essentially meaning they need to be a bottom 3 team or worse to have a real shot at attaining one of these picks and not having the whole losing season be a waste. In other words, if the Raptors are going to suck this season it is in their best interest to really suck for said sucking to matter.

The Raptors are also the team to do it as they have some valuable trade pieces in Bargnani and Calderon that could yield some positive haul. It's alleged that a Bargnani for Amare Stoudemire deal was floated earlier this spring, before the Raptors pulled out. It's unlikely that Bargnani would command such value on the open market with his performance thus far this season but Calderon has certainly improved his value with his heady point guard play. Trade those pieces for future consideration and the team becomes worse in the present and has a better chance at finishing in those final couple spots. Where it becomes hypocritical for me, is where we accept teams no longer trying their best to win in the short term, yet when Vince Carter chose not to try his best in the short term during the end of his contract we've spewed venom and hatred in his direction ever since and now we essentially want the team to do the same. If all the players gave a half assed effort than we could ensure this high pick but, no, everyone goes bonkers when this happens and we cry overpaid, greedy assholes. I understand the circumstances were different when VC was moping around the Dot and yada, yada, yada,. Let's be clear I'm in no way apologizing for Vince Carter's terrible selfish disgrace of a final season in Toronto. I'm just saying the notion of  tanking, 'suck for Luck' if you will, though a frustrating reality, makes us a bit hypocritical as fans. Just think if the Raps had just sucked just a tad more frequently last season they'd have Harrison Barnes instead of Terrence Rosss. Screw you Golden State.

Charlotte Bobcats - The formerly fiery Bobcats were my long shot of the century to make the playoffs. A former college coach, unheralded new bench boss, Mike Dunlap has brought his hard working collegiate approach to the pros and with so many young guys on this squad it seemed appropriate, and more importantly, it seemed to be working. The Bobcats had been grinding out 4 hour practices, trying to develop their young talent as quickly as possible and there's already been marked improvement in the development of Kemba Walker, Michael Kidd Gilchrist, and B.J. Mullens. That said, perhaps the arrival of the players first pay cheques served as a quick reminder that they are no longer in college and they do not need to listen to their coach or his college level tactics. Since their hot start  to the season (relative term), 7-5, the Bobcats have since lost 13 straight decisions, taking what was once a promising start and rendering it a distant memory in another underwhelming season for the fans in Charlotte. The Bobcats could certainly still use some lottery level talent proving it's still too early to start talking about light at the end of the tunnel here.
Current Record: 7-13 Crystal Ball: 37-45 10th in the East

Toronto Raptors - The Raps have made some significant progress this season adding last years lottery selection Jonas Valuncunius to this year's lottery pick Terrence Ross, but most important has been the addition of Houston cast off Kyle Lowry. Lowry has shown himself to be a veritable pitbull on the court, a tenacious competitor with a gritty aggressive personality the Raptors have long been in search of. The Raps can score with just about anybody, but they continue to struggle on the defensive end, despite Coach Dwayne Casey's pleas. Early on I thought this Raps team had the potential to compete for one of those final playoff spots, a bit of a surprise following last season's disappointing finish, but following some tough losses and an even tougher road heavy schedule to start the season it seems the Raps spirit may have been broken and they're in for another long winter up north. I still believe this team can win games, but the Atlantic division may be the best in basketball and if the Raps continue to struggle into the All Star break then they would certainly be a candidate to sell some of their talented offensive pieces. From a personal GM note, I'd move Bargnani, looking for a potential pick or expiring contract. Also I'd cut ties with Jose Calderon at the all star break despite his obvious offensive abilities (play him for now, up his trade value). They can't continue to play two undersized point guards on the defensive end for long periods of time and expect other teams not to take advantage.
Current Record: 8-19 Crystal Ball: 35-47 13th in the East

Cleveland Cavaliers - With Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao on the court the 2012-13 Cavs can be fun to watch at times. Kyrie continues to elevate his game to the next level and has shown flashes of becoming an All NBA talent. However, without Kyrie and Anderson, this squad can be dreadful to watch. Considering Irving's slight frame and Varejao's intense all out style, the Cavs will be hard pressed to keep both of those guys on the court for the whole season (Kyrie has already been out with a fractured finger early on.) Newly minted lottery selection Dion Waiters has shown signs, but he is not ready in any way ready to carry the load for the Cavs. Which leaves this team's fate in the hands of Alonzo 'Brick' Gee. In case we forgot, God hates Cleveland.
Current Record: 5-22 Crystal Ball: 30-52 14th in the East

Detroit Pistons - The Piston's looked like a team ready to take a step foreward but those thoughts now appear premature as Brandon Knight and Rodney Stuckey continue to strggule to lead this team to the kind of efficient offense it's going to take to compete. The Pistons don't have the wing scoring that makes NBA basketball so much fun to watch. Greg Monroe continues to be a solid option down low but if Greg Monroe is your franchise player... then hmm you better find another franchise player? I don't even like watching the Pistons play, so they also get a knock on the personal bias test, but when you're averaging the league's lowest points per game, I need not justify such a shabby ranking.
Current Record: 7-21 Crystal Ball: 36-46 11th in the East

Washington Wizards - Started the season 0-12 with no end to the losing in sight. I'll check back in June. *Or now, since I originally started writing this when the Wizards were 0-12, the Wiz have mustard up a couple wins finally, but things are still looking real bleak in the nation's capital.
Current Record: 3-20 Crystal Ball: 18-64 Last in the East

We'll get to the much more wide open and exciting Western Conference later in the week. For now let's shift gears and look at some Hip Hop.

So much good music on the way, not only generally speaking with countless big name records hitting the shelves just in time for the holidays, what with Big Shiny Tunes 38, and the latest installment of Music Dance2012. #stockingstaples. For real though, we've had releases from Big Boi, Game, Kendrick Lamar, ASAP Rocky, Wiz, T.I. and countless other swithin the last month or so. Making it easy to find 20 bangers, less easy to weed out the good tracks from the great tracks as I try and define superlatives. We'll keep the music coming in these very pages with my coming blog on the Top Hip Hop albums of the year, plus I'll have a Top 100 Hip Hop Singles for all of 2013, so we can catch up on months of gems passed by. Stay tuned for that in the coming weeks, for today we'll just count off my personal Top 20 songs of the moment for your instant gratification.

New Hip Hop 2.0 - The South Bout To Have Something to Say!

20. Frank Ocean - Blue Whale
As close as Frank comes to rapping I'll give him this one.

19. Game Feat. Dre (From Cool and Dre) - Black Jesus - The next two songs are inexplicably not on Game's album Jesus Piece, I know Game puts out lots of content but both of these songs are as good as many of the songs on that album. Enjoy 'Black Jesus' and 'Holy Water'. Gangster hymns.

18. Game - Holy Water - See above.

 17. Pusha T Ft. Raekwon and Joell Ortiz -Tick Tock - Consider this one on it's way off the list but I've been listening to it for quite a while, off Man With the Iron Fists Soundtrack

16.Game Feat. Kanye West and Common - Jesus Piece - The title track off Game's new album. If you can handle Game doing his best Kanye impression, Kanye simply repaying a Crack Music favour, and a just fair showing from Common than you'll love this track. It's not bad, just could have a lot more.

15. 50 Cent - Ft. Adam Levine, Eminem - My Life - If my street cred was in question I'm not sure the falsetto of Maroon 5's Adam Levine is the direction I'd turn, but Eminem certainly isn't a bad cosign, especially post mexican accent. This song is so radio friendly that I should rail against it as cheeze whiz passing as cheese spread, but I won't, I'll enjoy it like a good popcorn pleaser movie, it is entertainment after all.

14. Kanye West - White Dress - Another entry from the soundtrack of the RZA directed motion picture, The Man With the Iron Fists. Kanye continues to produce quality music, which should come as a surprise to just about no one.

13. 50 Cent Feat. Young Jeezy and Snoop Dogg -  Major Distribution - Looks like another single off 50 Cent's 'comeback' album, Street King Immortal' due out in February. I donno if 50 needs a 'comeback' album, I think he's still relevant. I think he just needs to accept that it will never be like "Go Shawty, it's your Birthday" ever again.

12. Wiz Khalifa Feat. The Weeknd - Remember You - Wiz has full on crossover and is no longer underground hip hop, instead he is indie hip pop? Something like that, while this is hardly hip hop as Big Daddy Kane may have envisioned; the genre is simply a mutation or evolution, however you prefer it, of sub genres. I enjoy it, that's what I care about.

11.T.I. Feat. B.O.B., Kendrick Lamar and Kris Stephens - Memories Back Then - T.I.'s new album due out any day now, Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head, has leaked some very promising tracks, this and 'Wildside' featuring ASAP Rocky rank as a couple I've enjoyed so far in particular. T.I. has also worked with fellow Southern legends Cee Lo Green and Andre 3000 (See Below) on a couple of other terrific joints that are worth seeking out.

10. Kendrick Lamar - The Art Of Peer Pressure - You could just as easily have Backstreet Freestyle here, all great songs off of Kenrick Lamar's critically acclaimed good kid in the m.a.d.d. city. I'll take the storytelling.

09.A$AP Rocky - LongLiveA$AP - The title track off Rocky's long awaited major label debut, one of the better songs off of the new album.

08. Big Boi Ft. Kid Cudi - She Hates Me - Despite appearing on Big Boi's Viscious Lies and Dangerous Rumours this track has an undeniable melancholic Cudi feel to it. That said, Big Boi adapts effortlessly to the sounds of the Moon Man in one of the highlights off Big Boi's latest expiramental LP.

07. ASAP Rocky - Fuckin Problems - If you can get passed some of the songs colourful language which is inherently terrible in a song which bears this title and course. The beat is undeniably catchy and this song will only further ASAP Rocky's meteoric underground rise to stardom, not unlike Wiz Khalifa from a couple of years back. Will his music become as asscessible, this certainly doesn't suggest.

06. A$AP Rocky Feat. Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson & Big K.R.I.T. - 1 Train - Epic posse cut off of A$Ap Rocky's new album, some very interesting names and varied flows in this multidimensional boast off.

05. Earl Sweatshirt - Chum - It should be noted that I'm a sucker for any head nod inducing piano driven riffs. Earl talks some real shit over the beat and that's the icing on the cake,

04. Big Boi Ft. T.I. and Ludacris - In the A - Taking a hot line and making it a hot song, Big  Boi takes a sound bite from 'General Patton' off his last album and laces it up as a catch ycourse in this Southern banger which boasts solid verses from fellow Atlien residents, T.I. and Ludacris.

03. T.I. Feat. Andre 3000 - Sorry - 3 Stacks takes an otherwise, 'good' track and with his extended verse turns it into a great listen. That's not to say that T.I.'s verse is garbage but when 3000 is at the top of his game, as he is here, there's few who can shine in his light. Lots of collaborations in 2012 for Dre, what will '13 bring?

02. Kendrick Lamar Feat. MC Eiht - M.A.A.D. City - Kendrick Lamar and West Coast vet MC Eiht team up on this coastal banger that shifts gears part way through. Countless other tracks could have surfaced on this list, Bitch Dant Kill My Vibe, Swimming Pools (dated), and the Recipe (also dated) and others listed above speaks to the quality of Kendrick Lamar's first major label debut. Here he prevents an Outkast reunion at the top of the chart. Respect to MC Eiht as well who brings it on this as well.

01. Big Boi Feat. Phantogram and A$AP Rocky - Lines - Probably my most played song off of Big Boi's new album. So with that I'll give it my number one spot, even if the course is a little sing songy. Sir Luscious goes hard.

That's it for now. More to come. Happy Holidays! Peace.

NBA Season Recap and Playoff Chatter

Hard to believe after so few short months, but the 2012 sprint edition of an NBA regular season has already rushed to a furious finish, playoff seedings coming down to the final few games. With no rest for the weary, the NBA season continues to march on towards it's championship culmination. As fans, let's catch our breathe as we recapitulate the season that was, and take a look at the happenings from the 1st round that have shifted the playoff landscape in a major way.

What's not so hard to believe is that the Knicks have already began casting their fishing lines and working on their short games. After what could only be described as a tumultuous season, the Knicks 2012 campaign culminated in a disappointing 5 game thumping at the hands of the Miami Heat. Amare was his usual self, dashing the teams hopes with yet another mindless display of incompetence. It's unfortunate he does not attack the defensive end with that same sort unbridled intensity. Instead of working hard (i.e. making his opponent work for position/ pushing Bosh off the block, closing out and running Miami's shooters off the 3 point line, or chasing rebounds) he just gets mad and starts punching things. I guess he wanted to put himself in the shoes of the fans, perhaps? Anyway I've had enough of Stoudemire, he can't play defense, his explosion has been robbed by his repeated surgeries and his contract is suffocating enough for fans to talk about, much less for management to work around. I hope he's not back in the fall because I think the Knicks have something in Melo at the 4, Chandler at the 5, Fields at the 3, Shumpert at the 2 and a healthy Lin at the point. Losing Shumpert in round one hurt far more than losing Amare. Shumpert represented one of the Knicks only perimeter defenders, an a great foil for DWade's isolation theatrics.

Regardless the Knicks weren't winning that series, they need to add depth in the form of another big, add another athletic attacking swing and it looks like they'll need a backup at the point after Baron Davis' knee called it a career for Baron in Game 4. So I say we float Amare and his big fat contract out there (5Y/100M) and see what we can get for him. Unfortunately we used the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups already, because with 5 years left on Stoudemire's 100M, it's looking like this might not end well for Amare in the Big Apple.

All that being said, the Knicks were more relevant in 2012 than they have been in years, I take small solace in that. Post script part 2: Phil Jackson wants to coach? I know Woodson did a hell of a job, but the best coach ever is available and were not even gonna lend an ear? Fukoutaher.

2012 Regular Season: The Recap.

Questions or Answers?

Typically we see the regular season as the judgement ground of a team's character, a barometer of things to come. Traditionally considered to be a marathon and not a sprint, this year's regular season was anything but a traditional one. Getting a late start on the 2012 season as a result of the silly lockout dust up that took place during the off season, this NBA season was much more of the short track variety. Because of this, I found it tough to get a real sense of the leagues heartbeat, with so much transpiring over such a relatively short period of time. (This point becomes emphasized when I get to discussing the Knicks tumultuous 2012 season.) All that being said, I began the season with an idea of they way I thought the season would play out and I'd have to say that while in some ways my assumptions have come to fruition, in other ways it's been a very strange season.

Debunking the Youth Theory?

Many experts and pundits were quick to emphasize the advantage the younger teams (Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Indiana,) would have over the aging rosters (Boston, San Antonio, Dallas, LA Lakers) due to the condensed schedule and necessity to play so many back to backs. While I think to some degree the experts prognosis held some weight, in other regards it was way off the mark. I think they undervalued the importance of having a great coach and IMHO Popovich, Rivers, and Carlisle are amongst the leagues best, ( A combined 6 Rings and 4 Coach of the Year Awards serve to back my claim.) So while the depth and youth of the Pacers is the feather in the experts cap; the wilting Sixers and the indefatigable, seemingly indestructible San Antonio Spurs, with the leagues best record, certainly debunked the theory that youth would outright trump experience in the shortened season. A laugh when you consider that Pop outright sat his aging stars at times throughout the season to offset the effects of the rigorously demanding schedule. Chew on that while you also consider Boston's meteoric rise in the second half, proving they still had plenty of juice left in the tank and that early assumptions of their demise were indeed premature. (Though I think they may have peaked and hit their stride a bit too soon.) So while OKC is admittedly young and very good, the trio of Harden, Durant and Westbrook already has a Western Conference Finals birth under their belt and should not be seen as an overachieving second seed as a result of it's youthful advantage, this is just a very good team, age be damned. All of this said I think San Antonio has to be the surprise of the regular season, a team that has become annually written off because of their aging core, yet possesses a serious threat to challenge for the NBA's title, count them out at your own peril.

The Empire State:

What else can I say about the New York Knicks season that hasn't already been explored ad-naseum. (Or stated above already concerning their playoff collapse.) The most over exposed, overrated 7th seed in recent memory, the season in Gotham city was anything but mundane. While most teams will exit with a squad resembling the one they started with, Madison Square has seen more facelifts than Hollywood Boulevard in 2012. ( Incidentally, team and venue.)

With initial high hopes dashed almost instantly after starting 8-15 the terminally ill corpse of the Knicks saw it's season hovering on life support (Exit Melo and Amare), when out of no where the squad receives the equivalent a heart transplant (Jeremy Lin), only to have the body reject the transplant, (Melo and Amare's return) because the doctor seemingly had misplaced the pieces during the operation, (D'antoni) only to have a new physician (Woodson) come in and properly sort the organs (players) into a working whole. Follow that? Anyway long story short, it's been a dicey season in New York and while the team has shown itself to be resilient under Woodson, they're still a tier below the elite of the league and their  rough start to the season left them with nothing more than a 7th seed and an anticipated early dismissal at the hands of LeBron James and the Miami Heat.

Cause: Too Many Games in Too Little Time               Effect: Injuries and Sloppy Play

I'm here to tell you that a lot of people got banged up in 2012. I guess you would have to go delving much further with in-depth research from multiple seasons prior to find out if this season truly has been an anomaly as far as the number of players who were knocked out of play during the season, but just off the cuff, I think this was one of the major by-products of the condensed schedule. A combination of some players arrival lacking the proper condition, the rigorous schedule that featured as many as 4 games in 5 nights coupled with a lack of recovery time and it seemed this season was even more decimated by injuries than any season of recent memory. Despite playing 16 fewer games than usual the number of players carted off seemed to be unusually high. There is no question that the quality of play also suffered at times with players entering the season out of shape, lacking practice time and so many quality players going down. Leaving teams to plug unpracticed and less experienced players in their stead. To this point I'm pretty sure the Raptors squad looked more like a NBDL roster by the season's end, but that might have been part of the recent tanking strategy that has plagued the NBA in recent seasons. Overall, it was an exciting season if not unpredictable and wrought with injuries.

Annual Regular Season Hardware Distribution: These Aren't Even Guesses At Won Will Take The Award Per say, More So Just Who I'd Have Voted For To Win The Award

Most Valuable Player: Lebron James - LeBron wins a two-horse race here with Durant (apologies to T. Parker and Chris Paul) as both were deserving but LeBron had to do a little heavier lifting with DWade missing so much time and the Heat relying on the King to be Mr. Do It All. Guarding and playing nearly all positions at some point in time or another.  Best player on planet earth.

Rookie Of The Year: Kyrie Irving - A no-brainer here as Kyrie put a very week Cav roster on his back and led the squad to some surprising results. The loss of Rubio to injury makes this one a no-doubter. Top 5 Rookies of 2012 in order: Irving, Ricky Rubio, Kenneth Faried, Iman Shumpert, Isaiah Thomas

Defensive Player Of The Year: Tyson Chandler - Yeah I'm a homer and yeah Serge Ibaka led the league in blocks but he gets to play with Perkins (+defender), Sefolosha (defensive perimeter stopper +defender), Westbrook (drafted for his defense, +defender), and Durant (+defender) around him, that's all he has to think about! Chandler has Amare, Bibby, Novak, Melo, J.R. Smith and Baron Davis around him, with only Shumpert and Fields being reliable defenders. Chandler continues to change the Knicks culture on D the way he did in Dallas, much like the way KG changed things in Boston.

Coach Of The Year: Greg Popovich - Should probably just make this an annual thing, yet Pop has only won it once before. No one can honestly tell me they thought the Spurs were the best team in the L heading into the season, no one is saying that still, yet Pop keeps the Spurs rolling. Plug n' play.

6th Man of the Year: James Harden - Another no-doubt selection here, Harden is the secret weapon of the OKC Thunder feasting on weak second units throughout the league in the 2nd Q, before filling up tired and worn starters in the 4th Q. Harden gives the Thunder that third scoring option and is a table guy in ever other way in that he brings lots to the table without taking anything away. Guy can pass, handle, rebound and defend at above average levels for his position. In line for a pay day real soon.

Most Improved Player: Ersan Ilyasova - Guy kept Milwaukee in the playoff race in the East, stepping up big for the Bucks (I hope for his financial sake that becomes a pun) when Andrew Bogut went out to injury. Naysayers be warned, I'm not cool with giving it to Ryan Anderson, who was great last year for the final few months the season. (I had him in fantasy, he was improved last year.) Marcin Gortat can't win because we all know it's the Steve Nash effect. Hmm Jeremy Lin?

On to the question we're all asking....

Who will still be playing in June?

2nd Round and beyond Playoff Preview:

Unlike the Regular Season which I've argued above presented us with more questions than answers, conversely the first round of the playoffs provided us with plenty of meaningful information. Championship aspirations and anterior cruciate ligaments were just a few of the major stories from round 1, as both were popped at the same time for the Chicago Bulls when Derrick Rose was lost for the rest of 2012. In a season riddled with injury for the returning MVP, he was never able to reestablish himself as the dynamic force that shook the league a year ago and made the Bulls a preseason championship favourite. All told, injuries have cast a looming shadow over the playoffs thus far with Dwight Howard's absence in Orlando, the loss of several Knick guards, Derrick Rose' injury, and now Bosh too may be out for the foreseeable future. With the loss of Rose it seemed that the East would be Miami's for the taking, but the loss of Bosh in their game one victory over the Pacers might see that series play a little tighter than initially expected.
For the most part round one played out as expected, top seeds the Heat, Spurs, and Thunder all rolled quite easily, the Bulls lost but it was hardly the upset it would  have been if they hadn't lost Rose so early on in the process.

Here are my Round 1 match-up rankings the Round 1.

Listed in Order of Greatest to Shit.

Great Match-up
Clippers v. Grizzlies - By far the best match-up of the first round. Clips prevail in 7, further supporting the case that the team with the best player (Paul) and finisher (again, Paul) will come out on top.

Great Match-up
Lakers v. Nuggets - This series turned quite exciting as the upstart Nuggets continued to prove themselves as a team that is greater than the sum of it's parts. The Lakers continual dysfunction will ultimately prove to be their undoing.

Good, Yet Partially Played Out Because You Always Knew What Was Going To Happen And How It Was Going To End, Yet You Continued To Watch For Self Confirmation and Affirmation, Match-up
Celtics v. Hawks - In what has seems to have become an annual match-up the Celtics continued their dominance over a stale Hawks squad that seems to have run it's course. It wasn't until Al Horford returned in Gm 3 that the Hawks even appeared to regain some sense of energy and losing to a depleted Boston squad (Suspended Rondo, injured Shuttlesworth and a Hurting KG). Somewhat good, yet overally predictable as the Hawks have never shown any ounce of the mental fortitude necessary to win a series like this.

Just Fair Match-up
Sixers v. Bulls  - Following a season of over achieving and over coming injury, the battered Bulls finally came down to earth in what amounted to a defensive battle with the Sixers in which games in the 70's were the norm and the play became unwatchable at times. If I called it unwatchable at times... it can't be better than just fair, I'm not convinced that it was only good D that had the shooting percentages so low in this series, bad shooters? DRose get well soon.

Just Fair Matchup
Thunder v. Mavs - The Mavs seemed to be disheartened after a pair of tough road losses to open the series left them deflated when it came time to defend their title back in Dallas. As good as a series an be considering the sweep, but no sweep can be more than just fair. Expect a shake up in big D this summer.

Most Disappointing Matchup - AKA Shit Match Up #1
Heat v. Knicks - Blah. Some marquee matchup this was. The Heat did what they we're supposed to do and the Knicks pretty much let them, pretty disappointing as a Knicks fan to type this but that pales in comparison to how disappointing it was to watch.

Most One-Sided Matchup - AKA Shit Match-Up #2
Spurs v. Jazz - Yawn. Someone should have told the Jazz that the playoffs had started. Only one team showed up here. Even Al Jefferson had conceded defeat before the 4th game. I don't blame the Jazz, all credit due for the Spurs.

ZZZZZ's Match-Up - AKA Shit Matchup #3

Magic v. Pacers- After digging deep and accomplishing an incomparable comeback in game 1 the Magic proved themselves to be more than just a bunch of Dwight Howard's teammates, that accomplished, they promptly went on vacation dropping 4 straight.

East

Boston Celtics (4) v. Philadelphia 76'ers (8)
The Celtics have to be the prohibitive favourite here as the 76'ers backed into the playoffs and appeared hardly deserving of an invitation to the dance. That said despite getting getting lucky in round 1 with the banged up Bulls, the Sixers appear to have recaptured the style of play that had people talking about them as an upstart squad back in January. But let's get serious, the Celts still have the 3 best players in this series (Rondo, Garnett, Pierce) and the best shooter (Allen). A combination of their experience and cagey talents will lead them past a well coached defensive Sixer squad, who will struggle to put up enough points to win themselves 4 games. Celtics in 6 hard fought games that will have people fearing the Sixers heading into next year. People's fears will remain irrelevant.

Miami Heat (2) v. Indiana Pacers (3)
Let's start by saying this series will be closer than many people expect. While the Heat remain the team to beat in the East, the loss of Bosh, and subsequently a big part of their size and depth as a result, has me thinking this won't be the cakewalk that many expect. The up and coming Pacers will have the size with David West and Roy Hibbert to give the Heat some problems in the paint. That said, the Heat still have the best players in the series and despite their perceived late game flaws, I still think they have a better collection of finishers to turn too. As much as I don't trust Lebron at the end of games, I really don't trust Danny Granger. One point of intrigue will be the wear and tear on LeBron and DWade as the loss of Bosh certainly means both will be relied upon to pick up the slack, both offensively and on the defensive end where LeBron will have to slide down and cover David West inside at times. That extra banging could burn the seemingly indestructible Lebron out if this goes 7, which I predict it will. True or false? If you put Lebron at any position, he is the best player in the league at that position? Arguably true of all positions, except maybe center and there might even be a debate at that position by the end of this series. Heat in 7.

West

San Antonio Spurs (1) v. Los Angeles Clippers (5)
This should be a helluva series for the fans. Both of these teams play an up and down style and both of these teams can put points on the board in bunches. Both teams have studs, bigs and some scoring off the bench. (Edge: Spurs) Both of these teams have players who can isolate and finish at the end of clocks/games. (Slight Edge: Clips) So it should be close, no? I'm not really convinced because while all of those things are pretty equal the Spurs still have Popovich calling the shots and in that regard I give them an incalculable tactical edge when it comes to game plan and adjustments. In addition the Spurs have had some time off and should be well rested for a Clippers team that just completed a hard fought 7 game series with the Clippers. That said the Clips do have Chris Paul, who tops my list of finishers in the series and should give the Clips the edge at the end of games with his ability to make things happen, both for himself and teammates, provided they're still hanging around at the end of games. More often than not, they won't be. Spurs in 6.

Oklahoma City Thunder (2) v. Los Angeles Lakers (3)
Those still living in 2010 will bill this as a series pitting the size, experience, and half court execution of the Lakers against the youth, speed and transition offense of the Thunder. Except this is 2012 and this ain't your older brother's Thunder, err, Sonics. The Thunder made the Western Conference finals last season and can hardly be regarded as a bunch of spring chickens. Not to mention calling the Lakers experienced is really a kind euphemism for saying they're old. The Thunder while being lethal in transition and having some speed to burn, aren't exactly small like the Heat, Ibaka is a beast with both size and strength and Perkins should provide enough size up front to contest Gasol or Bynum without needing much help from a double. To conclude, Thunder are big and fast. Leaving execution as the Lakers only hope; slow the tempo, dump it down low and then knock down open shots or go to work on the block, time after time and then some. The Thunder can turn the ball over at times, and are prone to settling for jump shots in the half court at times, allowing the Lakers to put the tempo in their favour. If the Thunder can keep the pace moving and if the Lakers can't hit their open shots (Something they struggled mightily with against the Nuggets) this one will be over quick. And that's not even discussing the Westbrook matchup, which will no doubt give the Lake Show fits as they struggled containing Ty Lawson in round 1. All told, I think I just convinced myself that the Thunder are going to win this one quite easily. Thunder in 5 and the end of the Gasol-Kobe era in LA.

I leave you with this. Funny as it may be I'm past the LeBron hate, I hope the Heat do well and that we can begin to appreciate him for the all-world talent rather than needle his short comings. That remains on him. I wish him well but guy's gotta win if he wishes to save his soul.

Most Anticipated Albums of 2012, NBA All Star Weekend, Plus Oscar Trophy Prognosis.

So much breeze to shoot... How bout a jumbled All-Star weekend prementarant (Preview-Commentary-Rant?), you want my half-assed predictions at this year's Oscars? You got 'em! and we'll take a look at what 2012 may hold in terms of exciting, new albums.

Jeremy Lin's future Disney classic continues to write itself as the hysteria has managed to last through it's 3rd week now, with few signs of slowing down, so long as the Knicks don't have the Heat on the slate. The Carmelo transition continues to be a work in progress but there's no question the Knicks are a much more complete squad now than they were less than a month ago, and it's not because Baron Davis is back, as originally hoped.

Hard to believe but we're already at the half way point of the 2012 strike shortened season. Along with the mid point of the season comes the annual all-star game in which the leagues most popular and deserving players square off conference bragging rights at stake East Vs. West. I'd have to say that the fan's vote went the right way this time around with most of the high getters being the most deserving as well as the most popular. James, Wade, Howard, Rose and Melo make up the East's starters. Nearly all no-brainers with Carmelo Anthony being the only obvious exception, gulp, if Lin had been getting burn all season he'd probably have ridden the New York vote wave that Carmelo did. Hard to say who would be more deserving as a starter, Igoudala or Pierce, Bosh maybe? But Carmelo has certainly not been a runaway selection in my opinion. (Aside: Am I hating on my guy? Unpopular opinion alert, but I'd say Tyson Chandler has the New York Knicks MVP to this point in the season, if you watch the games you know what I mean. ) Another interesting Knick/All Star storyline is that with Linsanity being what it's been, it's not hard to see him challenging DWade or DRose for an annual all star spot that would have otherwise assuredly been owned by these two beasts for the rest of the decade. The Asian vote is nothing to be trifled with, ask Yao Ming.

Otherwise, Rondo was probably a snub but he's in now with Joe Johnson out. Josh Smith may have been a legit choice as replacement if you wanted to keep a Hawks representative. The Bulls get some long overdue respect with Deng as a second selection. Roy Hibbert gets the Indiana nod, a tribute to how disappointing Danny Granger has been on an otherwise impressive Pacers squad. Unsurprisingly, no Raptor representation, I'd argue Barg's had some early momentum but injuries have derailed that. Is Amare a notable omission, nope, he's been do-do.

Out West the report is much the same as ther3 is little to argue with the vote of Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, and Andrew Bynum. You're lone quibble likely being that Love deserves to start over Griffin but take into account Griffin's popularity, his explosiveness and the fact that it is an all star game and he's the better guy to have in for this type of occasion. Both Lamarcus Alderidge and Marc Gasol are very deserving first time all stars, selected by the coaches, wait, what Marc Gasol? Pau Gasol? Yeah Marc is deserving and the Lakers don't deserve 3 All Stars to the Grizz having 0, for two teams with comparable records.

As far as the rest of the bench this was likely Nash's swan song as an all star but he was still deserving in my opinion over the likes of Monta Ellis, Steph Curry or Ty Lawson. All of these guys including Kyle Lowry as well have a case that they've been snubbed but there's simply not enough guard spots out West. Speaking of Lawson, it's hard to believe there is no Nugget on the squad but their slide out of the playoff picture made it hard for them to make a case for any one player. Utah suffered a similar fate, sliding into the break with it's tandem of Al Harrington and Paul Millsap likely splitting the vote between one another. For solely the 30 sum games of this season's body of work you could likely take one of the Utah forwards over Dirk Nowitzki but when you consider he is the reigning Finals MVP, a perennial all star, and that he is the lone representative from a very good Dallas team that entered the break playing very good basketball and there is really very little to complain about with this years squads. Tony Parker has been the best player on a very good Spurs squad, and Westbrook is and All-NBA type of talent. This should be a very good All-Star game with both teams being loaded with talent I'll take the underdog West on the road in Orlando.

Dunk Competition: The Dunk Contest as we knew it in our Vince Carter heyday is now unfortunately gone. There was a time when the leagues best got UP for this - Chase Budinger, Jeremy Evans - who!?, Derrick Williams, Paul George are not among the leagues best players or dunkers. That being said, I'll take Paul George and I hope I'm wrong about the dunk being dead. Poet.

*Knicks Guard Iman Shumpert was supposed to take part in this before being injured just nights before the competition, a rumoured dunk over Jeremy Lin on a couch was his winner, shame that didn't get to happen.

3 Point Shoot-Out: A mix of players and shooters fill out this years 3 point shootout, where the Heat's James Jones will defend last years title. Jones goes up against Kevin Love, Anthony Morrow, Ryan Anderson, teammate Mario Chalmers, and Kevin Durant who was a late addition for the scratched Joe Johnson. If players like Love and Durant get hot they could run off quite a number as streaky good shooters. Or maybe you'd give the edge to those whose specialty is the 3 point shot like Anthony Morrow or James Jones. Myself I think I'll take a bit of a hybrid in Ryan Anderson, a guy who has proven him self to be more than just a shooter this season and he's shooting in the familiar surroundings of his home court, I'll take Anderson.

Taco Bell Skills Competition: Fries supreme... er, that's not what this is about. While the other competitions routinely garner more hype, the skills competition certainly boasts the strongest roster. Steph Curry, John Wall, Tony Parker, Russell Westbrook, Rajon Rondo and Deron Williams all compete in a real who's who of top flight play makers.  I wish it was just a game of 3-3 though, rather than an obstacle course, yawn. I'll take Tony Parker in a field so strong I think the same player would win max 3 times out of 10.

The NBA All Star Game isn't the only entertainment on showcase Sunday evening, the 2012 edition of the Oscar's celebrates its achievements in film for the past year, with Billy Crystal once again set to host. Brace yourself, the depth of my knowledge is about to become far shallower, hence, the following will be referred to as my half-ass Oscar predictions. While I do claim to have a pretty good handle on the NBA, league pass and what not, I do not hold the same level of confidence in my knowledge of the film- bourgeois, foreign, or otherwise. While some years I feel I have a handle on the Best Films Nominations at the very least, this year I'm grasping at straws. The odds-on favourite is a silent film!? Really? Well aren't we cultured. I'm sure it's great. I might grow up. I don't know. Most categories I've only seen partial nominations, so yes, these predictions mean dick all. Enjoy.

What!? You can't vote for a film you haven't seen for film of the year!? Okay then, give me Moneyball, which will never win the Oscar. I donno maybe this year was a bit stuffy for me, I thought last year was, with The King's Speech and what not, which I should say I saw and liked, though I don't know that I'd get a lot of enjoyment out of repeated watches of that film though.

I've covered the most anticipating upcoming films for 2012. This week I took the same approach to what is on the horizon in the music world for 2012. Unlike the film industry the making of an album seems to require far less people and organization than a movie. I'm noting this because it seems the general public is made far more aware of films and more information is readily available for films. Albums may be a much more personal expression of an artist and as such there is less information depending on the artist's intentions. That said with so many media outlets readily available to mainstream media their are plenty of leaks to offer us a taste of what's to come. Another aspect could be that an album can come together much quicker (In some cases, right Dre), for instance, bands seem to be able to say they're going to go into the studio and that means in 3-6 months they'll have a product available for release. The hip hop scene features a lot more mixtapes and material leaks, maybe that's why album release dates seem forever in flux in this genre. Whatever the cases here are 30 albums/projects hip hop and otherwise that are reportedly on their way over the next 10 months. As always, temper you're expectations and excitement at you're own peril.

30.  Dr. Dre - Detox - Ha. The most anticipated album of 2006,2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, you get the point. We''ll see you again in 2013. Beats by Dre.
29. Ghostface and MF Doom - Swift and Unchangeable - Another submission pulled from the long overdue for a release wishlist, this album has been in production going on 5 years now it seems. Always one to pump out the albums without fail, consistently generating creative products, Ghostface has stated that all of his work on this album is complete. The hold up continues to be MF Doom putting the finishing touches on the work. An album that features mostly all Doom production with one track from the late great J. Dilla, maybe 2012 will allow us this blessing.

28. Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded - Nicki Minaj just appeared at the Superbowl! Albeit as a side dish to Madonna's aged yams, that's still a claim that most of the artists on this list won't ever be able to claim, not that many would care, but it is a testament to how much of a pop star she has become despite her raw rap roots. It will be interesting to see what direction she heads next with her sequel to last year's Pink Friday. Dropped on Valentives.

27. Rick Ross - God Forgives, I Don't -Say what you will about Rick Ross - he has no flow, he's a sell-out, he only raps about drugs and eating - he gets good beats and has an all star squad with his Maybach Music Group and I'll listen to this record for the couple of bangers it'll bring.

 26. The Weeknd - Wayne's protege Drake's proteges, The Weeknd popped up in a number of notable cameo appearances for Drake in 2012 and seem primed to make the jump if they tie their star to the right ship (read: Drake and Wanye) the could produce one of the big albums of 2012.

25. French Montana/ Machine Gun Kelly  - P. Diddy has retooled the Bad Boy line up and the 2012 edition features a couple of mix tape stand outs in French Montana and Machine Gun Kelly, expect them to attempt to each release a solo debut before the years out. Needless to say, Biggie Smalls is not walking through that door, Mase is not walking through that door. Black Rob would in a heart beat.

24. Modest Mouse - TBA - One of my original indie-band innovators I'm always excited for another incarnation from Modest Mouse. Through in rumours that Big Boi has been working on some of the production for this record and I'm even more intrigued. 22. Jay Z - Jay Z too seems to have immersed himself in a hip-hop rebirth as he has a renewed creative drive. Time will tell whether the birth of his new baby girl will inspire him to complete another album or push him further out of the game and into parenthood. It's been awhile since his 2009 solo release and talks of a new solo release for 2012 are certainly in the works.

23. Pusha T - To be honest I donno much about Pusha T aside from a couple of legit cameo appearances for Kanye West but he is on the G.O.O.D. Music label so he has beatsmith Kanye in his corner and a stable of artists to collaborate with. Big Sean's release was first priority but Pusha T is gonna get his time in 2012.

22. G.O.O.D. Music Project - TBA - Kanye's got his dirty digits on so much of this list, it's like it can't possibly all happen, an likely won't all happen, but even if only a few of the projects he touches come out it's a bounty for hip-hop music lovers. With a strong label of competitive and hard working rappers, where the head of the label might be the hardest working, expect a collaborative effort from this highly touted label before 2012 says it's last rites.

21. A$AP Rocky - One of the new kids on the block. LiveLoveAsap was his mixtape last year and it came out to rave reviews, reported to have something in the works for this year so I anxiously await what the best young talent out of Harlem in some time can do on a major label record. (He's with Sony Records)

20. Wiz Khalifa - ONIFC - For the record Wiz hasn't always been a rapper whose content targeted commerical success but that certainly seemed like the recipe on his major label debut Rolling papers in the spring of 2011. Hard to argue with the results if you're in the game to cash in, which is something Wiz has done a lot of of over the past year. With Pharrell and Adam Levine reportedly in line for cameos you can expect that trend to continue. Making the Prodigy H.N.I.C., inspired acronym of ONIFC all the more laughable. If you're wondering the title means, Only N-Word In First Class, Prodigy was talking about the trials of the streets while Wiz contemplates the struggles of surprised looks from the first class. I guess you rap about what you see, count my interest as moderate.

19. Tyga - Careless World: Rise of the Last King - Tyga has been all over the hip hop scene of late with his "Rack City" track blowing up everywhere. You know you've made it when Jeezy, Wale, Meek Mill and Fabolous want to jump on the remix. Throw in Tyga's appearance on the remix of Drake and Weezy's anthem "The Motto" and the timing couldn't be better for Tyga to release his major label debut. This just came out on Tuesday.

18. Nas and Common - Nas.Com - Nas and Common got together on last years banger Ghetto Dreams, which even appeared on Madden 2012. I guess the two felt the chemistry was nice and they'd like to continue to make music together, enough so that they've announced a proposed collaboration album titled Nas.Com. This has the potential to be outstanding, a complete flop and a mere pipe dream  all at the same time.

17. T.I. - Trouble Man - One of the rising stars of the South before his incarceration T.I. looks to return and muscle his way back to a piece of the 2012 pie. Anticipated to drop this summer T.I. will be looking to return to the Southern anthems that made him King, both literally and figuratively, back in 2006. Promo singles "Here Ye, Hear Ye" w/ Pharrell and "I'm Flexin" w/ Big K.R.I.T. suggest he's on the right track and the first single is reportedly with Usher so expect something commercial to build the hype this summer.

16. B.O.B. - Strange Clouds - I've no history of interest in the music of Bobby Ray, always finding he veered to close to the mainstream, too close to Bruno Mars for so this is a bit of a surprise for me, but I am looking forward to release of B.O.B.'s Strange Clouds album. I enjoyed B.O.B. on the B.E.T. cypher I caught him on this past year and I checked out EPIC (Every Play Is Crucial) which I found to be quite good, so I'm on board got Strange Clouds whenever it's release date stops getting pushed back and it actually surfaces.

15. The xx - TBA - The xx exploded onto the scene with their self titled solo debut back in the summer of 2009. Their infectious grooves feature fully formed arrangements of sound that are wide ranging and very catching to the ear. Hard to imagine them topping the quality of their debut, in which they showed a maturity beyond their age, but maybe topping expectations is just what they do, this time it'll be far more difficult than last time. Their sophomore effort is said to be 'club inspired' and they hope to have it out in time for the UK festival season.

14. The Shins - Port of Morrow - Can The Shins recapture the Indie magic that dominated air waves back when Garden State became the video soundtrack of the indie music world. Oh, Inverted World was game changing, follow up Chutes Too Narrow was a terrific album, but Wincing the Night Away kind of saw me lose my interest, time will tell if Port of Morrow can bring this listener, and many others, back into the fold.

12. The Killers - Been a fan of The Killers since the days of Hot Fuzz, climaxing with Sam's Town and culminating with Sawdust (loved their take on Dire Strait's Romeo and Juliet, among others), I wasn't a huge admirer of Day and Age. So it's with a subdued moderate interest that I anticipate a 'guaranteed' album in 2012. No date or title has been set but the band reportedly plans to take the things they've done well on past albums and do an album of those terrific things. Music sounds so simple when you put it that way, good enough for me.

11. Frank Ocean - Nostalgia Ultra continues to be one of my favourite R&B escapes from 2011 which only hinted at the possibility and talent of the crooning Mr. Ocean. 2012 should feature a major label debut for Ocean, which could feature some hip hop from Ocean's pals in Odd Future or more of the same and you're not going to hear a complaint from me either way.

10. Lupe Fiasco - Food and Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album - From the realm of things that will likely not happen, please, pretty please can we a legitimate album effort from Lupe Fiasco. What I'm really asking will Atlantic Records finally take the shackles of Lupe and let him record and release the Great American Rap Album that has been his destiny since his original classic Food and Liquor hit the shelves nearly 6 years ago. My 1 caveat being - no more pop hooks, please, I beg.

09. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid in a Mad City - Last year's Section. 80 mixtape was agruably the most critically acclaimed and well received by any newcomer to the hip hop scene in the past 12 months. Lamar has consistently shown an ability to represent the west coast in a socially conscious way, while at the same time remaining loyal to his roots in the streets. Lamar likely won't get the same commercial daps as some other artists releases this year but it won't be for a lack of talent, his content just isn't as uplifting or gratuitous as some of the other artists and why should it me, he's giving an uncompromising view of life in the streets of South Central Los Angeles.

08. Kid Cudi & Dot Da Genius - WZRD - Kid Cudi continues his evolution on a new album with collaboration from Dot Da Genius, judging from the snippets I've heard, don't expect this to be much of a hip hop album as Cudi seems to have gone in a different direction on this one and while it may still be hip hop it certainly falls under a sub-genre. Either way, Cudi is an incredible artist and I'll lend my ear to hear what new sounds he wants to represent his art. Drops in a few days.

07.  Kanye West - West is enjoying some of his greatest creative successes of late with My Dark and Beautiful Twisted Fantasy and Watch The Throne both boasting some of the most outstanding production of the past 2 years. Supposedly constantly at work on what will be his next solo project we can only wait with baited breathe. Kanye is a dick sure, but I don't want to be his pal, I just want to hear his beats.

06. MGMT - MGMT- MGMT are reportedly blessing the music world with a new album in 2012. Their debut album Oracular Specatacular blew minds and had everyone dancing to Electric Feel and Time to Pretend. Their follow up Congratulations featured a new direction for them sonically and the album received a slightly under whelming reception. It will be interesting to see if the two young men, continue to evolve musically or if they return to the sounds that made them world beaters. Set to release a self titled album sometime this year, no date set yet.

05. Kanye West and Jay Z - Watch The Throne 2, or maybe Still Watching the Throne, or Watch The Throne - The Legend Continues  - Jay Z allegedly claimed that Kanye and himself had more in the tank following the release of 2011's most anticipated record. With 2011's release going so well, it's no wonder that both listeners and creators are keen for the two genius' to get back in the lab.

04. Mumford and Sons - TBA - Mumford and Sons are reportedly hard at work on their follow up to Sigh No More. The band claims to be engaging in the final steps of the process but their is still no title or release date set. The general public certainly awaits with a feverish desire to hear some new music from the Sons. Though there is no real rush for the band as their debut record Sigh No More just finished 2011 as it's top selling rock album, and that was released in 2010 and featured songs from as far back as 2008. Be great to hear some new music from this melodic bunch.

03. Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball -The Boss has been rolling out some of the new single off of his newest album Wrecking Ball set to hit shelves on March 6th. This will be Springsteen's first effort since the passing of his longtime E Street Band saxophonist and good friend Clarence Clemons. The album centers on the current state of the American economy and the recent 'Occupy' movement.

02. Nas - Life Is Good - Nas is in my top all time, so yeah, I'm greatly anticipating his latest effort. "Nasty Nas" and a number of other sonically charged highlights from 2011 suggest that he hasn't lost his edge just yet. Expect Life is Good to be more of the same incomparable flow and militant idealism, the title suggests he may have gained new perspective since his last Untitled ( Nigger) Album in 2008, don't expect him to have stopped speaking his mind though.

01. Outkast/ Big Boi/ Andre 3000 - Now this might be wishful thinking, in fact it surely is, but there have been rumours for some time suggesting there could be multiple 2012 releases from the quirky Outkast duo. Let's start with Big Boi being the most likely to release an album this year. His 2010 solo effort, Sir Lucious Leftfoot, Son of Chico Dusty was one of the best efforts from that year, so I'm all for another solo effort from Daddy Fat Sax. Andre reportedly has also been working on a solo effort, which seems likely because his name has been popping up increasingly more often in recent times. I can recall appearances on Wayne's album, as well as Drake's Take Care, Young Jeezy's recent smash "I do." So he's definitely been getting back to his music. And of course the best thing of all would be if we could get these two old friends back together making a cohesive album. 1 out of 3, I'll settle for, 2 would be unreal and 3 would make the Mayan prediction a welcomed farewell.

I don't really like this song I don't think but there's no denying 3 stacks goes after this beat,  giving the track a totally different feel that that scattered noise that occupies the sound before he finishes it.

That's it for another edition of the Top 20 as well as the blog. As always peace, love and go Knicks.
