Butler Vs. Florida

In a game that early in the second half looked like a sleepy Florida victory of the 8-12 point variety, erupted to become a classic game from this years NCAA tournament thus far. With both teams struggling to find their long range shots early in this half it wasn't until Florida really looked to pound it inside that they began to get some separation. However, the never say die Butler Bulldogs got some offence from unlikely sources. Can't say I really liked Florida's last play for the potential win/overtime, but whatever they had nothing to lose at that point. In OT, fouls have been a major factor and Mack has really shown to be a player. And somehow Matt Howard continues to be at the right place at the right time (hitting the tying free throw, getting the crucial rebound possession on a late jump ball) And there it is 8 seed Butler wins in a comeback upset! 74-71! Giving Shelvin Mack my player of the game. Beauty.

From Sweet to Elite! Plus a few others...

Good afternoon internet! It's Saturday, the 26th of March , but you already knew that cause you're the all knowing internet. Random aside to start here, but the existence of the internet is something I think on a day to day basis we take for granted. I grew up on a 14.4kpbs dial-up modem but for as long as I can remember, really, when I wanted to know something quickly, procrastinate for hours, nut off, whatever, etc. The internet has always been there just a thought about how that's a staple of our generation in particular that has shaped our world. On to the next one....on to the next one...

Most people will have seen this video by now but if you haven't it's worth checking out. I'm all for the anti-bullying message it sends. Zangief Kid! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Byp5WH2hfJ8

So the NCAA tourney got off to a blistering start last Thursday with numerous upsets, buzzer beaters and unfortunately, I felt, sour feelings towards the officials. Embrace technology folks, get the calls right! Faww! Seriously though, Texas has a legit gripe! Washington too! By now everyone's brackets have been shattered to bits so I don't mind admitting I was wrong about a few things. For one, the SEC has been better than I thought, ALOT BETTER! While the Big East are the perennial media darlings with their infinite number our tourney team entries (Set a new conference record in 2011) it's the SEC leaders Kentucky and Florida who are still playing basketball. Connecticut is the lone remaining squad from a wide collection of Big East squads. North Carolina has continued to play great basketball as it has peaked at the right time and they look to be a formidable in what looks to be a great match-up between UNC and Kentucky. As much as I've been wrong about the SEC, the Kansas Jayhawks have easily the coziest match-up heading into tonight. Kansas faces the 11 seed VCU Rams on Sunday. The Rams snuck into the tournament with an OT victory in the play-in game on the Tournament's opening Tuesday. But then again, how has having the supposed "easiest route" worked out so far. Butler looks to have used their veteran leadership as well as their familiarity with the big stage, to show them the path back to the Big Dance.

With 3 of the 4 number 1s already eliminated it just goes to show what type of a year its been in college basketball, and how much parity exists. An incredibly level playing field in what is a very competitive business where coaches are trying to build a team of foundation guys that will be around for their 4 years, as well as peppering in the 1 and done phenoms. Every year coach Cal has to find another DRose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, this year it was Brandon Knight; who may not be in company with those previous names yet certainly has seen his star rise in Wildcat lore with with his game winning shot over No.1 Ohio State on Thursday Night. All I'm saying is that it would be a tough gig with all that pressure, for example : Kyrie Irving will likely leave Duke after only playing 11 games!... Kyrie Irving should leave, he'll be a top 10 draft pick but Coach K must have put a tonne of time and energy into Kyrie Irving there only to see him be injured for 80% of the season and then bolt! I know it's the biz, I'm just saying! Besides as an old teammate of mine once said "Coach K's a slut!".

One great thing about Thursday Night's match-ups was that you had two major candidates for College Basketball's Player of the Year in BYU's Jimmer Fredette and UCONN's Kemba Walker. Both players have been scoring their respective teams to big wins in post season play. Fredette's antics have been well documented all season long. Walker has been rolling for the last month and half; single-handedly carrying the Huskies to the Big East conference crown with and unprecedented 5 wins in 5 days. After watching both players go I'd have to give the award to Walker after Thursday nights performances. I understand the voting is based on the whole season and I haven't seen a lot of the games by any means but I thought Walker had another riveting performance and more importantly the Huskies moved on. There is no question that Walker has a better supporting cast and as always this can help or hurt a players POY case. For Fredette his lack of supporting cast enables him to have the perpetual green light and he fires shots up unconscious to the existence of teammates - or defenders, or space or time, for that matter. And he often makes a lot of them. He shots ridiculous off balance scoops and yada, yada, yada. But I think his lack of supporting cast is what killed BYU in the end and also made him look a little more flawed. His 3-15 performance from behind the arc is more than a bit underwhelming, save for the fact that a couple of the ones he did hit should have been worth 6 or 7. (The pull up from next to the ribbon! I will check that ribbon again tonight to remind myself how deep that was!) Regardless, Jimmer struggled down the stretch and he had trouble covering Florida's Erving Walker off the dribble at times. They still pushed it to OT so I may be being a little over critical here but for me Jimmer's 32 were a lot less efficient and timely than K. Walker's 36, which also included numerous timely buckets down the stretch. Walker didn't fall in love with the outside jumper, instead got to the rack and set himself up to receive space to get his step back off. Without question Walker had more help, Jeremy Lamb was an ultra efficient 9-11 from the field, sparking the Huskies early on when Walker was struggling to find his shot. After the slow start Walker played big right on through to the finish and for me that was enough for me to suggest he is deserving of this seasons' Player of the Year.
(Ed's Note - Originally I feared I would have to make some kind of acknowledgement to Duke's Senior Leaders Kyle Singler or Nolan Smith, but then they both played later and an acknowledge for their legitimacy was no longer necessary)

Far as the NBA goes, it is my contention that Derrick Rose should be up for the winner of both the MIP award and the MVP. Think about how much better the Bulls are this season than they were last season, also consider Noah and were Boozer both out for considerable stretches. Deng has been good but I think the surest reason is Derrick Rose's quantum leap as both a leader and as a more well rounded offensive player. In my opinion a leap that takes Rose from the player he was last season...to MVP of league  - also suggests a leap worthy of saying he was the most improved, which I think means something when you're already performing something at a ridiculously elite level. My two cents.

In leisure there are a bunch of movies out there I'd like to see but if you've seen them and you have an opinion you'd like to share drop a comment. Maybe I'll do a couple brief reviews of my own after I'm checked them out. In theatres now that I'd like to see... Limitless, Battle: Los Angeles, Paul, Hobo With a Shotgun and maybe Lincoln Lawyer, though I'll likely wait on that one. Also, Suckerpunch opens this week. In music, Snoop Dogg's Doggumentary has gotten some good initial reviews it comes out Tuesday, Wiz Kahlifa of "Black and Yellow" fame has his first major label debut "Rolling Papers" drop on Tuesday as well. E:40 has a couple of albums (2) drop on Tuesday and Big KRIT should have his independent release album "Returnof4eva". I've been bumping this tune by Big KRIT, check it out! I think that's it for today, was a busy week, hopefully get a few more updates flowing throughout each week.

The Madness that is March

Weeeoooo! We are on the precipice of the most exciting weekend in sports (IMHO); the NCAA Basketball Championship tournament - more aptly known as March Madness. I know this is coming in a bit late to serve as a preview but the tourney hasn't started yet. (Not for all intensive purposes; my bracket doesn't count the extra play in games, so I will follow suit). Furthermore, I've been... busy? Busy enough. I had to come up with my own bracket after all, do the research and what not. Shitty intro, no time to fix it, let's get down to business.

We'll break this down region by region:

East Region:  Newark, NJ

Contenders for the Crown:

(1) Ohio State - The East region's number 1 seed has looked the part of a national champion all season long. What Ohio State lacks in depth it more than makes up for with its talented 6-man rotation.
With Jared Sullinger banging inside and Jon Diebler bang 3s from the outside the Buckeyes have a legit inside out combination and are surrounded by veteran leadership from the likes of David Lighty and William Buford. The Buckeyes are the natural favourite from the East region.

(2) University of North Carolina -Going ahead and laying the chalk here and picking the 1 and 2 seeds as the contenders- (Duh! Thanks for the preview Jared. So we should just take the higher seed. ok.) Some number 2 seeds are pretenders but I don't think this is the case here. The Tar Heel's finished the season strong challenging the Dukies for the ACC crown in the conference tourney after winning the ACC regular season crown. UNC is again stacked with talent and are always well coached by Roy Williams. The Tar Heel's have had a relatively poor showing in recent NCAA showings and will be out to avenge those losses this year with a team playing it's best basketball of the season at just the right time.

Pretenders:

(4) Kentucky - Despite being given a 4 seed and coming off a strong showing in the SEC tourney I just don't think the Wildcats have whet it takes to bring home the crown in '11. Long gone are the uber-world talents of John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins from last year, this years team features a new crop of talented young freshman, but I think ultimately their inexperience and coach Calipari's nuttiness will be there undoing. I just haven't seen enough explosion from them in watching them this year and I think the SEC was a weak conference in general this season.

(3) Syracuse -  I've always had a soft spot for the Orangemen since the days of Melo, Warrick and McNamara but I just don't think Syracuse is playing championship caliber basketball at this point in the season. It's never a good sign when you're best basketball was being played back in December, it might make for an enjoyable December vacation, but that's about it. The Orange boast a talent guard in Scoop Jackson and a superior tactician in Boeheim but despite that and the strong competition of the Big East I just don't think this is their year, in fact I'm thinking and Indiana State Sycamore upset in round 1. CHALK it up to a hunch i guess.

East's Cinderella Pick: Indiana State

1st Rd Games To Watch:

(12) Clemson vs. (5) WVU - Upset Special
(8) Villanova vs. (9) George Mason

Players to watch:

Jared Sullinger (OSU)
Harrison Barnes (UNC)
Scoop Jackson (SYR)
Isaiah Thomas (Wash)
Tu Holloway (XAV)

Region Champ: OSU

West Region: Anaheim, CA

Contenders for the Crown:

(1) Duke - Not sure that I need to validate this but the ACC champs have it all: depth, senior leadership, great guard play, and coaching. Led by All-American seniors Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith, the Dukies are primed for another deep tourney run. The defending champs certainly have the horses and with rumours that their number one recruit Kyrie Irving could come back any day now, the rich are only getting richer. It's never bad to be rich, right? Right.

(3) University of Connecticut - The UCONN Huskies are coming off an impressive Big East Tourny Championship run in which they one and unprecedented 5 games in 5 days. More remarkable when you consider the 5 wins didn't come against the sisters of the poor club team. The Big East has a tourney high 11 conference representatives and Connecticut bested all of them last week. Guard Kemba Walker has the skills and the swagger needed for a tourney that has always favoured undersized lead guards. He's half the size of Khaled El-Amin but twice the player and he too could take his Huskies to the promise land this season.

Pretenders

(4) Texas - Hurts to say this because of the Canadian representation on this team, (They boast 2 Canadian players who play legit minutes, but we've had Steve Nash for years, what else do we have to prove!) Nationalism aside the fact of the matter is the Longhorns have backed their way into the postseason losing 4 of their last 8. Once rated the number 1 team in the land the young and inexperienced Longhorns are not playing their best ball these days which has them in my list of pretenders. Also they are coached by the nutty Rick Barnes which has them in my list of pretenders.

(2) San Diego State - I watched the Fab Five Documentary and if Steve Fisher can't win a national title with the likes of Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, JuwanMontross, George Lynch and a bunch of other no names- I can't let that slide. How did Webber not know they didn't have a timeout? How did they not have a T.O.? You get my point.

West's Cinderella Pick : Missouri

1st Rd Games To Watch

(6) Cincinnati vs. (11) Missouri Upset Special
(5) Arizona vs. (12) Memphis

Players To Watch:

Derrick Williams (ARZ)
Nolan Smith (Duke)
Kawhi Leonard (SDST)
Kemba Walker (UCONN)

Region Champ: Duke

Southeast Regional: New Orleans, LA

Contenders for the Crown:

(1) Pittsburgh U - The Pitt Panthers were the unlikely 'other' No.1 (1:4) when it came time for NCAA selection committee to dole out the award, and awarded they were. Many believe Pitt was given the easiest route to the Final 4, while the number 1- number 1 (Ohio State, 1:1) were given the toughest path. This seems to be the truth. Pitt had been enjoying a great season in the Big East only to lose out in the conference to a tough buzzer beater shot by Kemba Walker, so we shouldn't penalize them to much for that. Pitt has the size to dominate the glass and the guard play from Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wannamaker to take Jamie Dixon's boys all the way to the big dance. Pitt has stumbled in the tourney in the past but this is their best team to date, could this be their year?

I don't see any other legit title contenders from this, the weakest, region.

Pretenders:

(2) Florida - Don't be fooled by their overrated number 2 ranking, this was widely viewed as an oversight by the selection committee in a year in which there was far more griping over the selections than in years past. As I said earlier this was a down year for the SEC and if I'm gonna have the SEC champion Kentucky Wildcats listed as pretenders the Florida Gators have to be as well. The Gators may survive the first few rounds and possibly the region but I think that will speak more to the lackluster region than anything else. I can think of several teams more deserving of this number 2 ranking. I've watched the Gators play and I'm selling.

(3) BYU - I love watching Jimmer Fredette walk the ball down the floor and shoot 28 footers in people's eye. I love watching that. But can a team built around that 1 dimension make it all the way to the national championship, me thinks not. I realize Steph Curry carried Davidson on his back a number of rounds in years past but I'm not sure Fredette is as good as Steph Curry nor am I convinced his supporting cast is. After losing key starting forward Davies to the honour code of having sex with his girl, this team just doesn't look the same, and nor should it! I love Fredette I see him scoring 40 points unfortunately 60 points a game will only be enough to get them passed a round or two.

Southeast Region's Cinderella Pick: Utah St.

1st Round Match Ups To Watch:

(7) UCLA vs. (10) Mich St.
(5) Kansas St. vs. (12) Utah St. Upset Special
(6) St. Johns vs. (11) Gonzaga

Players To Watch:

Ashton Gibbs (PITT)
Dwight Hardy (STJ)
Taj Wesley (UTST)
Jimmer Fredette (BYU)

Southwest Region: San Antonio, TX

Contenders for the Crown:

(1) Kansas - Much like Pitt in the Southeastern Conference I think the Jayhawks are the dominant squad in their bracket. However, in the case of the Jayhawks it has less to do with what the other teams in the region have and more to do with the talent laden Kansas squad has. Kansas has all kinds of talent and a relatively easy road to Houston if they play up to their potential. (P.S. Kansas has been my team ever since the days of Kirk Hinrich, so personal bias is at play) Kansas has to be the overwhelming favourite in this region but likely Louisville, Vanderbuilt or Purdue will have something to say about that before it's all said and done. The Jayhawks have a plethora of versatility both in their guard play and in the bruising paint play of the Morris Brothers. I like it when brothers ball out! (What up, Dan! What up, Thomas!)

Pretenders:

(2) Notre Dame - Don't get me wrong I think Notre Dame has a decent squad and I don't mind Hansborough as a lead guard I just think the Fighting Irish lack the depth and the size to make a tourney run. The Irish rely heavily on their ability to stroke it from the outside and if that shooting stroke fails them they could be in tough in a grind it out defensive style game on a neutral court. Just what I'm think after watching the squad play a couple of times, I have a lot of Big East pretenders and I'm a fan of the Big East conference! Oh well! My opinion is that the Irish will go cold at some point and that will be their undoing, until then they'll be fun to watch.

(4) Louisville - I like Louisville, I've been a fan of the Cards since I went to Kentucky a few years back for the tourney and rooted for Louisville and Edgar Sosa all weekend. I can personally say that even though Pitino looks likes a dapper mafioso he never actually threatened my life. That said, I think the Cards overachieving season finally comes to an end. Ironically, this years overachieving squad will likely make up for the underachievement of seasons past in the tourney and take the cake just to spite me and this whole 2 hour column writing endeavour!

Southwest Region's Cinderella: Morehead State

1st Round Games to Watch:

(7) Texas A&M vs. (10) Florida St. Upset Special
(5) Vanderbilt vs. (12) Richmond

(I also like USC to upset Georgetown if they make it in through tonight's play in game versus VCU)

Players to Watch:

Marcus Morris (KAN)
Ben Hansborough (ND)
John Jenkins (Vandy)
Preston Knowles (LOU)
Peyton Silva (LOU) (Shout out to new baby Bateman! I don't even know if this guy is very good; great name though)

Regional Winner: Kansas

And their you have it...if all else fails you can always just match up the team nicknames and use that as your bracket strategy. (Example : St. Peter's Peacocks vs. Purdue Boilermakers - you best be boiling those peacocks)

Here is my competitive bracket in its entirety: All that's left now is the crying! Happy guessing! Go Jayhawks!

My intro to let you know...

Good morning/afternoon/evening, likely early morning if you find yourself reading this. I'll start with a quick introduction or rather the "why" behind this. (Do I owe my reader this, if I'm the only reader, probably not) I've always had an enjoyment and a passion for writing, that goes back to my childhood. Furthermore, I'm a pretty opinionated person and this gives me a medium to channel my focus and my energies into something meaningful to me. I stress meaningful to me, because for some this blog will just be a series of asinine opinions that many have little or no interest in. For instance, if you don't like films, movies, (I realize this excludes no one, continue), hip hop music, sports coverage with a bias towards basketball and football, you don't like reading or simply don't like me in general - this is likely not the blog for you.

With that mini disclaimer out of the way we can move on... My name is Jared Budd, I'm a 25 year old supply teaching/waiter. Currently I am aspiring to land a contract in the education field and in doing so, pour some knowledge into the beakers of tomorrow. (If you're reading this you probably already knew most of that drivel.) In the meantime I have some extra time and this is how I'll spend it, dribbling out a series of nonsensical words and dressing them up as discourse. I've long held the belief that one of the best jobs would be to write your own opinions on things(sports, movies, music), sounds simple enough, so I wanted to find out.

In the coming weeks, I will (along with a few guest writers, I hope) attempt to write a series of columns. reviews, previews, top 10s and other things of interest to me. Again this is as much a therapeutic undertaking as it is an entertaining one. Mostly I'll be shooting the breeze about things that me and my roommate Stru scoff about on a nightly basis. Among these things will be movies, albums, singles, restaurants, professional athletes and intriguing events of the day. Your comments are always welcomed and appreciated, meh. I will try to keep things contextually relevant and there will also be elements of regional coverage but mainly it will serve as a melting pot of ideas as I try and figure this world around out, or something like that.

Looking forward to posting a March Madness preview in the next couple of hours! This is quite possibly the most exciting sporting weekend of the year!

'Til then, in the words of P Collins: "you'll be in my heart".
